Liberal MP Adam van Koeverden was caught on video courting voters at a local mosque by accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and promising to represent Palestinian interests in Ottawa.
Running in Burlington North—Milton West, van Koeverden said that he, alongside fellow Liberal candidate Kristina Tesser Derksen, would represent the Muslim community’s views on the Israel-Hamas conflict if he’s re-elected.
“And I just want everybody to know that our voices, your voices, will be strong in Ottawa. Strong to condemn the genocide and end the genocide in Gaza, to continue to make sure that Palestinian voices are heard in Ottawa by our leaders,” said van Koeverden.
Van Koeverden bragged about his membership in the Canada-Palestine Parliamentary Friendship Group for the past five years, chaired by Liberal MP Salma Zahid.
In 2022, the Canada-Palestine Friendship Group was embroiled in controversy after Nazih Khataba was invited to attend one of the group’s events despite having a history of Holocaust denial.
Van Koeverden attended what appeared to be a gender-segregated event, as he is seen delivering his speech to a group of men while referencing a parallel event his female Liberal colleague was leading “downstairs.”
True North reached out to van Koeverden for comment, though no response was given.
Van Koeverden has advocated anti-Israel talking points for several years, even after the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
Alongside 32 other MPs, van Koeverden signed a controversial letter on Oct. 20 2023 calling on Israel to immediately adhere to a ceasefire, just over a week after launching their counteroffensive against Hamas.
He has signed the “Vote Palestine” pledge, committing to support a two-way arms embargo on Israel, end Canadian involvement in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, recognize Palestinian statehood, and more.
Van Koeverden’s recent comments come shortly after Liberal Leader Mark Carney responded to a heckler at a rally claiming there is a genocide happening in Gaza, to which the Liberal leader said “I’m aware, which is why we have an arms embargo.”
Carney tried walking back the comment, claiming he did not hear the heckler mention genocide and that he only heard “Gaza.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Carney’s remarks in a post on X, accusing him of undermining a democratic ally in its fight against Hamas.
“Canada has always sided with civilization. So should Mr. Carney,” said Netanyahu.
“But instead of supporting Israel, a democracy that is fighting a just war with just means against the barbarians of Hamas, he attacks the one and only Jewish state.”
What a tool that pos is. ZERO ethics and ZERO understanding of what Canadians struggle with. If voters are dumb enough to vote in this clown again, then we truly are doomed as a society.
Surely he has crossed the line, and yet nothing is done about it! Will this ever stop? Our sovereignty is at stake here!
