Immigration cuts, not BC NDP policy, drove falling rent prices
Statistics Canada data shows B.C.’s population fell by 24,673 between January and March, driven mainly by a 31,972 decline in non-permanent residents.
The BC NDP government is misleadingly taking credit for falling rent prices across the province for the third time in six months, most recently on Tuesday.
In a June 2 release, the B.C. government highlighted cost-of-living gains from measures targeting speculation, cutting red tape, boosting housing supply, and strengthening renter protections, as previously cited by Housing Minister Christine Boyle.
Experts have noted, including in a Vancouver Sun column, that while the B.C. Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs credits NDP housing policies for lower rents, and federal immigration cuts played a significant factor.
