Hundreds of British Columbia forestry workers are about to lose their jobs as two more softwood lumber mills shut down, victims of the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade war.
I live in BC and the tariffs do have a minor effect in our softwood lumber industry, but the greatest threat to these jobs are the union loving NDP. The voters truly believe the NDP has their backs, but in reality, every single time the NDP comes to power in BC the first people to lose their jobs are the NDP voters/supporters. The NDP is a industry crushing, business crushing group. I am 62 yrs old and this goes all the way back to the Dave Barret years in the 1970's. The second greatest threat to our natural resource industry are the Indians, they are not a smart culture for business, the majority of recently closed mills has nothing to do with the tariffs, but everything to do with the Indians and their newly awarded power and their lack of of business sense. All the Indians want is huge profit and do nothing for it! They are not stewards of the BC lands, they continually over hunt and fish, because it is their right, they do not give back to the land from which they take, ex: of this is in northern BC where the Indians log their treaty 8 land, but never replant their harvest, they do not follow BC forests practices code, which means they do not protect streams, lakes, rivers, they leave a mess and do not practice any form of regeneration to our forest. When questioned about this they cry not enough money to practice this code, yet for decades the mills have always, by law and code been able to practice the regeneration of our forest and continued to show profit. Only the dumb c@&t, virtue signalling people will disagree with me!
US duties and tariffs are at the expense of the US consumer. That could deter sales. But knowing the ndp government, it's likely they have cut back logging quotas. But then BC and Alberta have been over logging in recent years. All for the tax dollar and exportation. At the price of lumber it's no wonder they've gone to building with styrofoam and concrete.
Get off the kick of blaming tariffs for job losses!! Do some serious digging into “benefits” that accrue from “reciprocal”tariffs. Must be at least 30 Countries from which to choose!! China and Canada are the only countries refusing to work with the US!! Interesting……
See Wyatt Claypool for the real explanation for what has happened in BC.
NDP policies are killing the softwood lumber industry, not US tariffs.
Maybe the NDP government could have the people losing their jobs in forestry to building an oil pipeline from Alberta to Kitamaat?
It's such a bizarre province. The province tries to stop development. Nobody was that crazy in the 1980s.
