Canadian households are now carrying about $1.80 in debt for every $1 of disposable income and it’s still climbing

New Statistics Canada data shows debt has outpaced income for the sixth straight quarter, even as the country navigates a recession and household finances keep tightening.

“The ratio of household credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income increased for the sixth consecutive quarter, climbing by 0.9 percentage points to 179.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2026,” wrote Statistics Canada in a report published on Monday.
