Senator Leo Housakos is calling for the immediate return of the Senate in the wake of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to implement counter-tariffs, saying that “meaningful parliamentary oversight is essential” when it comes to decisions with our largest trading partner.
Trade committees in both the Senate and the House of Commons have not met in months and aren’t slated to return until Sept. 21 and 28, respectively. If Parliament sees out its complete 13-week break, it would not return until two weeks after the retaliatory tariffs take effect on September 8.
