After years of statue removals and school renamings tied to Canada’s founder, the Waterloo Region District School Board spent roughly $175,000 renaming Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School in 2021.

The move was part of a broader push at the time tied to erasing the legacy of Canada’s first prime minister.

Grade 10 student Ishan Acharya questioned the Waterloo Region District School Board’s $175,000 decision to rename Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School in 2021, citing Macdonald’s role in the creation of the residential school system.

The board’s director of education, Scott Miller, said the decision reflects the board’s “ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.”
