Hamilton police investigate second downtown shooting within several days

Hamilton, Ontario has been rocked by yet another downtown shooting, within days of another similar incident.

According to the Hamilton Police Service, two adult males were wounded by gunfire in the early hours of May 11, 2025. This comes shortly after a previous report from True North about a separate shooting in downtown Hamilton.

In a statement released Sunday morning, the Hamilton Police Service said that officers were dispatched at approximately 1:50 a.m. to the area of Upper James Street and Jameston Avenue in response to reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, officers found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police also reported that a black SUV was seen fleeing the scene and are now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle.

An investigation is currently underway.

“We are asking residents and businesses on Upper James Street between Hester Street and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway to check their surveillance cameras between 1:45 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. for any suspicious activity or sightings of a black SUV,” police said in Sunday’s statement.

Just days earlier, police said a shooting occurred in downtown Hamilton at a location described by local reporters as an “open-air drug bazaar.”

And just weeks previous to that shooting, in another similar incident, a 21-year-old Mohawk College student, described as an ‘innocent bystander,’ was killed by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop.
At this rate, Hamilton could surpass last year’s shooting incidents, which were the highest-ever on record according to police.
