Foreign visitors leave Atlantic Canadians with $42M hospital tab
Nova Scotia leads the way with $27.2 million in outstanding bills, followed by New Brunswick ($6.8M), Newfoundland and ($6.2M), and PEI ($1.4M).
Atlantic Canadian taxpayers have been stuck with nearly $42 million in unpaid hospital bills after foreign visitors walked away without paying over the past five years.
The East Coast was left with $41.69 million in unpaid medical bills from foreign visitors between fiscal years 2020-21 and 2024-25, according to a SecondStreet.org analysis of provincial health data.
Nova Scotia overwhelmingly leads the way with $27.2 million in outstanding bills, followed by New Brunswick ($6.8M), Newfoundland and Labrador ($6.2M), and PEI ($1.4M).
