Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that the prime minister and his top staff reviewed Ontario’s “Reagan ad” before it aired. On Monday, Carney admitted the ad was the reason trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada broke down.
During a Monday press conference, Ford told reporters that an ad that aired twice during the World Series baseball games in the U.S. was approved by Carney and was “the most successful ad in North American history.” This was despite U.S. President Donald Trump citing it as the reason he doesn’t want to talk to Canada “for a while.”
“(Carney) saw the ad before I put it out. So did his chief of staff. They both saw it, and we move forward on it. But again, we achieved our goal. You know, as we say, mission accomplished. It was done,” Ford said. “They’re talking about it in the US, and they weren’t talking about it before I put the ad on. So I’m glad that Ronald Reagan was a free trade about that.”
When asked if the ad was the reason for the trade talks breaking down during a press conference in Malaysia on Monday morning, Carney said to “take the President at his word for the reason,” and that the ad “is the reason why, from the perspective of the federal government, which he’s responsible for.”
When asked if he was upset at Ford for releasing the ad, which Ford has since blamed Carney for, Carney said it’s vital for Canadian leaders to “keep their cool” during “unexpected twists and turns” and that Canada has made “a lot of progress” in trade talks, which he still stands by.
The commercial was pulled from American airwaves after Trump announced on Truth Social on Saturday that he had terminated trade talks with Canada due to what he called a “fraudulent advertisement on Ronald Reagan’s Speech on Tariffs.”
“Ronald Reagan loved tariffs for purposes of National Security and the Economy, but Canada said he didn’t! Their Advertisement was to be taken down immediately, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a fraud,” Trump said in the post. “Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now.”
Trump told media Monday he didn’t care whether it was “provincial or Canada itself,” adding the government of Canada “all knew exactly what the ad was,” including Carney, and that he would be giving Canada the silent treatment “for a while.”
The ad, which Ford’s office said cost $75 million, is an edited version of a 1987 radio address from Reagan.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said in a statement that the ad campaign used “selective audio and video” of Reagan’s address and that the ad “misrepresents” the radio address.
