First Nations upset that Senate rejected making "residential school denialism" a crime
The assemblies have called on the Carney government to explain how it plans to address First Nations’ concerns, and accused the Senate of not having their “best interests in mind.”
Several First Nations have expressed “profound disappointment” with the Senate’s decision to reject an amendment that would have made residential school denialism a criminal offence.
The amendment, proposed by Sen. Nancy Karetak-Lindell, who attended a residential school as a child, sought to amend the Criminal Code to make it an indictable offence to publicly “condone, deny, downplay or justify” the Indian residential school system or to “misrepresent facts” about its history.
