Feds extend 2,700 work permits in Manitoba, including for illegal migrants
The Federal Liberal government has offered at least 2,700 work permits to migrants in Manitoba, including those in Canada with expired visas, while working to create permanent residency pathways.
While Alberta is seeking immigration restrictions and border officials are investigating an international student protest in Calgary, international student protesters in Manitoba are having their demands to remain beyond their original visa agreement met.
Manitoba’s temporary workers and international student organizations are rejoicing as the federal government has extended Manitoba Provincial Nomination Program candidates’ work permits, including for those who have overstayed with expired visas.
The federal Liberals announced they will extend up to 2,700 work permits for temporary workers who have received letters of recommendation from the Manitoba government; they hope to give migrants more time for the feds to introduce a pathway to permanent residency.
The announcement states that granting migrants permanent residency will support the Liberals’ plan to “reduce the non-permanent residency population and return to sustainable immigration levels.”
