An excellent article . I fully agree .

Peter Bradley's avatar

Please take note of the main points of this article and include them in a letter to your MP. Letters to MPs need no postage stamp.

When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, the planes would fly in, drop bombs then fly away. Afghans had no air defence. Canadians need a strong air defence to prevent the same from happening here.

Don’t expect Americans to prevent bombing runs on Canadians.

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

Just a reminder. We have NORAD. So We are not completely at the mercy of foreign attack. But I agree getter done. Buy what the Air Force wants , needs no political brown sugar . By the looks of things a long lead time is needed.

Colin Pratt's avatar

NORAD is outdated and NO longer useful as there are satellites.

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

Then if it is useless why is the USA and Canada supporting it? Yes You have satellites. but sats do not intercept flying objects. Yes The can warn .

Colin Pratt's avatar

Therefore NORAD is useless. As is the Gripen. Norad is outdated, obsolete and useless as Canada has outdated CF 18's Oh wait - the US might come to our aid with the F35's

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Well now it would be the same Liberal Party cancelling what has been thrice ordered. You can expect that they must have been somewhat or completely paid for at least once from cancellation fees ! Trudeau cancelled what Harper ordered paying a huge cancellation fee, 1/2 Billion; then he finally reordered the same planes at DOUBLE THE PRICE !

Now ?

Please Find a way to Protect CANADIAN'S for just STUPID, STUPID POLITICIAN'S !

If We could ask one thing from God, that might be the most requested ask of, TODAY !

Then Lock those SOB's up so they can never have an influence on anything or do this crap again !

JosephPhallis's avatar

Yes, we need the most protection from STUPID POLITICIANS,

A R Chamberlain's avatar

Such brilliant decision makers, NOT!!! And on our dime…

David James's avatar

At some point F35's will qualify for classic status too. Then they'll be reduced for quick sale.

Brian Miles's avatar

I say - let Canada buy the Gripens and then ALBERTA can buy the superior F-35s for OUR Air Force!

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Both planes are really amazing.

For the need of F-35; they would likely be worn out with our NATO commitment alone. We could really utilize both.

The Grippin is no slouch; we can buy 10 for one F35.

It would serve our Arctic & Coast Lines. Honestly, Canada needs more than 88 jets.

F-35 need an army of a support team.

It's really worth researching the qualities of each.

The Grippin has some Stealth Capability. With the weaponry now, it can fire on target 20 or so miles away and turn at a 90. The bottom is exposed and stealth. I thought the same as you also. Until I started reading.

Whatever, thisCountry needs complete New everything.

We can't attack the enemy with tampon's, wemight possible take out somebodies eye.

David James's avatar

Well said and comical too! Thank you Allan. "Laughter is the best medicine."

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Also the Grippin vs many other jets fighters. It has beaten them, even in scenario's 1 against 6 enemies if you can believe those stories were true

David James's avatar

In these days of AI what is true now?

So sit on our hands and do nothing, after we already committed significant funding to the development, is that your plan?

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

That initial investment was written off when Trudeau cancelled them the first time. Maybe 1/2 Billion; but you may know the number better. So much damage & loss through Trudeau Gov't

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

They said the technology in stealth only had 5-6 more years. That was 6 years ago.

Eldeezy's avatar

Undoubtedly, the F-35 is the better one on one aircraft. Canada's problem is they expect this aircraft to have a ground support capability as well. With 88 aircraft to cover MILLIONS of SQUARE MILES of airspace Canada needs a second fleet of dedicated ground support aircraft, cheaper and more dedicated to such roles. Or better yet, take a page out of Ukraine's book and invest heavily in setting up 3 or 4 regiments of highly trained drone operators and equip them with three or four types of the much less expensive drones, possibly hundreds of each type, and then three or four squadrons of the larger, more expensive drone types such as the U.S. Reaper. The smaller drones could do everything from anti-tank, anti-artillery, anti-personnel, and reconnaissance while the big drones could be used for patrol, interdiction, and specific targeted attacks. Let the airforce patrol the skies while the drones could patrol our borders and much of the arctic. As expensive as the big drones can be, they are still far cheaper and easier to replace than a highly trained pilot and his fighter. Canada should use nothing but the best available fighter and use it for air to air missions only. Tactical aircraft, in this day and age and given Canada's tiny military force, should only be drones these days. Helicopters should be well armored and armed but primarily for troop transport rather than attack platforms.

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

Thanks , another way to look at the problems of Our border protection.

My wife and I left Canada for the southern US in 2021 as the lack of freedom was becoming asphyxiating. The comment I most often hear from my American friends and neighbors(and believe me they watch what is going on in Canada) is that Canada is no longer a serious nation. The F-.35 saga is just one of many examples.American is a serious nation and Canadians should wake up from their Marxist slumber.

Daniei Smith's avatar

Merry Christmas to you David.

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Yep, and it only took one dipshit politician to destroy the Worlds view of our Country. That flunked math in school and only ever had a part time teaching job !

They limited debates with canned question's. Not real debates where Cdn's could judge intelligence of your to be PM ?

The bad thing is that after 2 f'n Trudeau's, we know the likelihood of having another idiot Gov't if Carney isn't that already ? We know there'll be another along shortly ?

There's the problem, the West know's this, and everytime a new idiot gets in; they Gut the West's Economy. So even though we love Our Canada, we can't afford to suffer another idiot Gov't.

Separation and adjustments is less painful

Than a manufactured GUTTING of our economy. The West has to form it's own Federal Gov't to survive for the future of it's people.

David James's avatar

Yes. Merry Christmas Daniel.

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

The Sewer-RAT-Liberal’s are that in corruption in this Country. They adviser’s/contractor’s-AKA(PROFESSIONAL RAT ADVISER’S) have guided them theough the maze of deception’s & accountability 11 years now ! That’s right, Lier’s have a hard time keeping their stories straight, so they have professional’s to deflect the truth and stir the mud !

Our official opposition, can no longer step into that pit of RAT-Liberal’s for feat of being cannibalized. What poison will it take to clear the barrel and disinfect it for ever more ? And the FED-NDP are equally a sewer of RAT Infestation !

Make CANADA GREAT AGAIN !

Oh wait; it isn’t possible & that’s why the WEST wants out !

Beyond BROKEN; you that keep voting Liberal, can not see, because ? Well we really don’t give a shit anymore; because CANADA as you once knew it, is no longer !

Just cut us loose in the West; please don’t talk to us about a united Canada, ever again !

It is a joke, & THE LIBERAL PARTY OF CANADA DESTROYED IT ! You could say it can be repaired, we can get past this. You would only be partially correct; because here in the West we know, in a few years if not already under Carney; THERE WILL BE JUST ANOTHER RETARDED TRUDEAU LIKE LIBERAL GOV’T, that GUTS THE WEST’S ECONOMY YET AGAIN !

How is any of this progress ?

You can’t for a second say I am wrong !

Canada-West-Strong ; where your vote will actually count, and your independent Western-CDN Federal Gov’t will actually work for you !

Irene Mosher's avatar

The decisions made by this government are puzzling. Why sabotage your own country??????????

T Robert (Bob) Hambley's avatar

As I see it Carney's problem with the F35 boils down to 2 factors. First, he hates Trump for humiliating him meeting after meeting. Secondly and probably most importantly, Carney promised the Swedish Royal Family that he would buy the plane when they visited him in Ottawa and Carney is such a Royal ass kisser that he must deliver.

All sounds petty and pretty ridiculous but try and find a better reason as the Gripen is garbage compared to the F35.

David James's avatar

Canistan, "The Mouse That Roared."

Ms Smith's avatar

I'm increasingly embarrassed by the decisions made by our bumbling PM, and the prior one also. I believe it is all intentional to destroy Canada for the globalist agenda. There's zero common sense to this.

Eldeezy's avatar

I would also just add that Canada should be investing in missile systems, particularly SAMS but also surface to surface systems as well. The current Russia-Ukraine war serves as a suitable template for what works and what doesn't work on a modern battlefield that is somewhat similar to what an attack on Canadian soil would look like.

David James's avatar

Perhaps then XI will be able to low-ball his offer for what will be left of Canada.

Ruth Bard's avatar

If they ever finish waffling and commit to a contract, the F35s will be obsolete by the time the first ones are delivered.

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Then US is now purchasing the next generation fighters. And you are correct. It was stated about 6 years ago, STEALTH only had 5-6 years left before it was detectable & here we are.

Kevin Akre's avatar

Evidently the Gripen has closer ties to Brookfield.

Marilyn Hagerman's avatar

Is it a surprise to anyone that this Marxist liberal government actually has no serious intent to upgrade anything in our military? A strong capable military does not fit in very well with Carney’s intended and WEF’s planned Beijing takeover of this fractured country! Tampons in the men’s washrooms, bunking in with Carney’s LGBQ queers, adhering to a “green” climate concept……Canada will definitely never have a strong and ready defence force!

JosephPhallis's avatar

How can that be? I heard that they are upgrading the Tampon Dispensers in the men's washrooms at great expense!

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

I heard they were creating a new automatic weapon to shoot them.

Having not enough bullets for our soldiers to even train with.

They don't maim but can leave a red mark on Your forehead !

Lawrence Clooney's avatar

Keean Bexte - Merry Christmas from Ottawa. You knocked this out of the park with one of the best articles I've read on the Gripen vs. F35. Even the CAF detailed analysis points to F35.

ONE

Earnie McCutcheon's avatar

Well written and agreed. Canada must match our partners. Much of the technology in the F35 was completed with Canadian Engineers from the beginning. Not sure why we regularly throw away our good design work. Canadian-educated Engineers head south for good-paying jobs.

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

I believe it all started when Diefenbaker scrapped the Avro Aero project. Ever since then this portion of minds left the country for greener pastures.

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Could it be because of idiots like Trudeau & Jagmeet Singh ?

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

That certainly adds to the picture in a negative for Canada.

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Yes, agreed !

Hey you can watch that movie free on Youtube. It may be called the Avro Plane?

But that nuance is there. It stars Dan Akroid. It shows the simple influence of the US, when Dief was on a simple fishing trip. The movie portrays many angles of the politics in Canada at the time.

The Avro Arrow remains the benchmark still today.

The Brits had the engine, and offered free back to Canada if we paid the freight. Not sure what happened there.

I think that movie pending where you lived in Canada, a lot. The character that was played by Akroid, was likely the straw that broke everything down when he mowed Dief over. It doesn't show everything, but you have to wonder who Dief's advisers where. The story is tragic in many ways.

There should be a movie made showing the myth about what happened to the plane that got away. The Anericans and French wanted the jet engine, the other wanted the planes body.

Look at the space shuttle, it really did what they were dreaming to do wigh the Arrow, and the Concord had one of the Engineers go there, and develop it.

ALLAN YOUNG's avatar

Still a very good movie, worth watching again

If I could speak to Carney: "Who the kcuk do you think you're fooling? Trump can see right through you!

And then there's the cozying up to Xi. WTF Carney! Enough said!

Our government is stupid. More interested in insider politics than making Canada 🇨🇦 a force to be reckoned with since we are a sovereign nation Same goes for our economy 😡😡
