During the B.C. Conservative leadership debate, leadership hopeful Caroline Elliott accused Kerry-Lynne Findlay of serving as Conservative party whip when Parliament unanimously voted to declare the residential school system a “genocide.”

The exchange sparked a dispute between the candidates over the procedural details that led the federal government to adopt the unanimous motion following the purported discovery of so-called “mass graves” in Kamloops.

In an interview with Juno News, Findlay disputed the allegation and said she does not believe the Canadian government committed genocide through the Indian residential school system despite her fellow MPs at the time adopting the motion, while Elliott’s campaign has refused to back down on the claim.
