A mayoral candidate in Kitchener, Ontario, is gaining international attention after posting a campaign video declaring that he’s a “non-binary queer” who doesn’t feel like he belongs because not enough members of his community “share” his “aesthetic.”

David Alton is pushing for a host of new initiatives, such as resuming “safe consumption sites” for drug users, creating “indigenous spaces,” creating tax-funded housing projects for homeless, low-income people, and the recently incarcerated.

Alton is also campaigning on a promise to “pilot basic income” initiatives and start publicly funded “dance programming,” which includes a “diverse network of dance instructors” to provide “free dance programming” at City Hall.

All this, in a city which in 2024 declared its gross long-term debt was over $79 million.
