Time to abolish publicly elected school boards. They should be groups of volunteers who currently have children attending the schools in the school district. If there are too many parents wanting to volunteer, then select the appointees by random draw after their background have been fully vetted. Alternatively have school boards function like town hall meetings where the parents in attendance vote on anything proposed by the 'trustees'. Majority rules when the votes are held just like things should be done in a democracy

I find all of this both sad and incomprehensible. How can people charged with the care of children, be it a parent, guardian or educator not understand how inappropriate and possibly damaging this can be to a young mind? Odd, how the same cohort who micromanages their child's physical safety with helmets, elbow pads, injury-proof playgrounds and minimal physical risk has no problem exposing them to concepts that are age inappropriate and could be, to many, troubling. Childhood is such a short period in a lifetime, don't steal it. Let children be children.

Teachers become teachers because they are GREEDY and want as high an income as possible with the minimum amount of time spent 'at work'. We would all like to have every holiday on the calendar as a day off, even it it's not a paid day off. We wouldn't need special two day or more holidays for 'professional development'. Bottom line is that ALL teachers only care about the money and don't care how badly they screw up the heads of children. Remember parents, you are the only ones who truly love your children
I resent that comment. I was a high school teacher in French immersion, and a good one. I was never paid enough for all the work I was doing, insuring my students had a meaningful experience in my class, learned something and think, while becoming independent and responsible, ready for the next level. No dropout in my usually full classes. There was basically no life between the first day of school and the last one, I worked till midnight, sometime later, 5-6 days a week. We had very little teaching resources in those days, I had a new course to prepare every year (except one), some years teaching in 3 departments (I have a diverse background). It took a couple of weeks to decompress after the end of the school year, and I was starting to get in gear 1-2 weeks before school started again. I might have done more than required by the system, but I could look at myself in the mirror with pride. My students knew that I worked more than they did and they respected me. I treated them like I wanted my children to be treated. I earned enough for a decent living but I could never got rich on that. I challenge you Brian, do/did you work as much in your profession? I realize not all my colleagues worked as much but I did and I can look back with pride and no regret.

In most professions, there are those who have the vocation and those who are there for the money. Let's just hope that those who have the vocation are always much more numerous. However I don't think I could be a teacher in the system today as my personal values would clash with the so-called values promoted by many Departments of Education. In Québec it used to be called Department of Public Instruction before the Quiet Revolution. Education had a much broader sense than schooling, the development of the whole person, and I don't see much education anymore.
