EXCLUSIVE: Former Conservative candidate acknowledges slaughtering birds for personal use after rejecting allegations of an illegal slaughter operation
A former Conservative candidate admits he slaughters birds on his property after repeatedly saying he didn’t kill on his farm, while pushing back at accusations that he ran an illegal slaughter farm.
Former Conservative candidate for Scarborough Southwest, Mohsin Bhuiyan, has acknowledged slaughtering birds at his Bowmanville property for his family’s consumption, after spending weeks claiming there is no slaughtering occurring at his farm while fighting against allegations that he was operating an illegal halal slaughter business.
Following a public controversy that drew in community members, media coverage, and discussions about alleged Islamophobia, Bhuiyan maintained that claims he was running a slaughter operation were false. However, after repeatedly saying that no slaughtering occurs on his property, he later confirmed that he does slaughter birds for his family’s personal use.
Bhuyian denies selling or distributing the meat and rejects allegations that he operates a commercial or illegal slaughter enterprise. Both provincial and municipal authorities have deemed that his Bowmanville “hobby farm” was not operating as an illegal abattoir.
Juno News was alerted to multiple social media posts and comments recommending Bhuiyan’s Bowmanville property as a place to obtain meat locally, including one post recommending it as a place to get Halal meat.
Bhuiyan said many of the local residents who were concerned about alleged illegal slaughter were “Islamophobic.” He told multiple audiences that he does not slaughter birds on his property.
On Tuesday, at an “anti-hate” event hosted by Bridget Girard, the former Liberal candidate for Bowmanville-Oshawa North, Bhuiyan admitted to Juno News that he does indeed slaughter animals on his property.
