Conservatives are sounding the alarm over Bill C-3, warning the Liberal government has weakened safeguards around Canadian citizenship and could allow people with serious criminal records to obtain citizenship by descent.
Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner blasted the legislation on Jul. 16, accusing the Liberals of opening citizenship to people with criminal records.
“Should a person with a criminal record be entitled to automatic citizenship in Canada? The Liberal government seems to think so,” Rempel Garner said.
Bill C-3 grants citizenship by descent to eligible people without requiring the language tests, citizenship exams or discretionary security screening that apply in other citizenship pathways.
