After receiving a tip from an anonymous source in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), True North discovered that “100%” of the chicken offered at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown is halal.
“Canadian Forces Base Gagetown is the only confirmed base that offers 100% Halal chicken in its mess hall at this time,” said Nick Drescher Brown, a spokesman for National Defence. “The CAF are committed to providing its members with a variety of nutritious food options, including those which accommodate dietary restrictions whenever possible.”
Halal means “permissible” for Muslims in Arabic. The Halal certification process involves slitting a living animal’s throat as its heart remains beating and keeping the head attached to the body while draining its blood. During the process, a Muslim says “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar,” or “In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest,” over the dying animal’s body.

Drescher Brown told True North that there is no CAF-wide policy mandating all chicken served in CAF mess halls be halal certified.
“Individual units decide how much of their chicken they want to procure as Halal-certified,” he said. “CAF Strategic Food Services is continually engaged with various cultural stakeholders, like religious leadership from the Chaplain Branch, to determine what cultural and spiritual accommodations CAF members require, including Halal dietary restrictions.”
Under the Defence Administrative Orders and Directives, Religious or Spiritual Accommodation rules, the CAF is bound to “consider” any request for accommodation based on religious or spiritual belief, provided that the belief is “sincerely held and reasonably connected” with the individual’s faith. Drescher Brown noted that the obligation is set out by both the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act.
He said the rule “aims to eliminate barriers or unfair treatment that may affect CAF members.”
“Not all supply contracts mandate Halal certification for chicken; however, the CAF standing offers include specific line items where the product description explicitly requests Halal-certified chicken,” Drescher Brown said. “These items are listed alongside regular chicken products, allowing suppliers to bid accordingly.”
He said there was no single halal certifying body for the CAF and that the certification is managed by the forces’ suppliers, namely Sysco and Gordon Food Services.
“CAF Forces does not direct these distributors on where to source their Halal products. Instead, the list of required food items, including Halal options, is submitted to Public Services and Procurement Canada by commodity,” he said. “Suppliers interested in bidding on these items must do so via the CanadaBuys website.”
He said that the CAF does provide halal field ration options, but that it’s separate from the standard Individual Meal Pack that most members receive while on deployment.
Drescher Brown was unable to provide information on how many tax dollars have been spent on procuring halal products in the CAF, but promised to provide an update on the relevant figures once the data was gathered.

If all the chicken is Halal, where is the respect for non-Muslims?
