Premiers Danielle Smith and Doug Ford proposed a new 500,000 bpd oil pipeline Monday from Western Canada to Ontario, echoing the cancelled Energy East project. When asked who would fund it, neither gave a definitive answer.

“Pipelines have gone from impossible to a national imperative. The Alberta oilsands have gone from a target to a national treasure, and we’re launching the greatest expansion of oil and gas infrastructure and production in decades,” Smith told reporters Monday in Calgary.

Premier Danielle Smith is proposing a 3,300-km pipeline from Hardisty, AB, to Sarnia, ONT. At full capacity, it would move 800,000 bpd of Alberta oil, strengthening access to eastern refineries and boosting Canada's energy security.

“Remember, we are one of the largest reserves on the planet,” she continued. “We’ve got 177 billion barrels of recoverable reserves [using] today’s technology. We’ve got 1.8 trillion barrels of oil in place, so we’ve got to think big… being one of the top three energy producers and exporters in the world.”

The proposed 3,300-km Northern Shield Energy Corridor would run from Hardisty, AB, to Sarnia, ONT, strengthening access to eastern refineries and boosting Canada’s energy security.
