I got a flash for you Lizzie. Every ocean on earth has tides , currents and storms. They are not a threat to large ships that regularly sail these waters. Sporties like myself have to use some caution and common sense but the ocean is generally safer than navigating the Skeena and Fraser Rivers and their tributaries.
I was talking with one of her constituents who said when she was first elected, Elizabeth May pointed out that in the waters around Vancouver Island there were 2 Supertankers a day floating by, now though, since Elizabeth May was elected there are about 13 a day.
