British Columbia will install new signs at U.S. border crossings declaring the province “never the 51st state,” as Canada’s latest retaliatory tariffs on American goods take effect.
Premier David Eby announced the move Tuesday while warning the escalating Canada-U.S. trade war will cost jobs and shutter businesses on both sides of the border.
“People will lose their jobs and businesses will close on both sides of the border,” Eby said at a Victoria news conference. “We have to look out for one another. We have to buy Canadian whenever we can.”
The signs will greet travellers with the message: “Welcome to B.C., Canada. Strong, proud and never the 51st state. Sorry.”
