Eby proposes suspending Indigenous rights law
B.C. First Nations expressed “complete opposition” to a proposed pause of DRIPA, according to reports.
The B.C. NDP is reportedly considering suspending its flagship Indigenous rights legislation, prompting immediate backlash from First Nations.
According to reporting from The Canadian Press, Premier David Eby and senior officials recently met with First Nations leaders to discuss a proposal that would pause the province’s
Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).
One source told The Canadian Press the proposal would suspend key sections of the law for three years, while another confirmed a suspension plan was discussed but did not specify a timeline.
