Drawing a line on immigration

In the October referendum, Albertans will be asked the following question:
Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities?

Prior to the referendum, the question to ask in relation to this topic isn’t what the outcome of this vote would be, but rather why Alberta’s provincial government might be formally probing the public for their thoughts on this matter.
