How many of these appalling stunts will the Ontario Conservative party tolerate before there’s a loud request for Dougie to step down as leader? I would have thought it would have happened before now but this SHOULD trigger a leadership recall.

He’s making a bad situation intolerably worse.

It's DOUG FRAUD.

PERIOD!!!

This guy is a complete idiot, fool and moron all in a single "rather large" package.

Perhaps currently the biggest single threat to what used to be Canada and that given all things takes quite a bit of doing.

Fraud however has likely done that.

Unfortunately, the majority of Ontarians who voted wrote HIM a blank cheque to spend their tax dollars and drive up the provincial debt, regardless of whether it was because of what political party he belonged to or who he was related to. Our right to vote makes us the authors of our own destiny, so people who vote for the likes of Trudeau, Carney, Ford and Olivia Chow, or don't bother to vote at all, have no one to blame for the mess they're in but themselves.

If you don't think this was intentional you need to turn in your journalist card. (Or join the CBC.) Rumours of a trade deal out of the US yet Carney still needs the anger to try and squeek through a fall election, so enter Carney's little minion Dougie. Okay, big minion, all the noise and even more damage with the big boy and Carney gets his wish, he can paint the American's as big bad bullies and he is the only one that can stand up to them. Except he hasn't. Not once. But the old fogies will still vote for him. It's time to get a PM that actually believes in and loves Canada, not one that is using and abusing us into economic freefall.

I'm 64. I'm right in the "fogies" category. I see dozens of them voting like sheep for Carney and I see it in the places that count: Ontario and the east. The 60-plus vote block east of Milton, Ontario (all the way to Labrador) gave it over to Carney. If you have read any of my other comments then you know how I feel about our system being rigged: It is. When PEI gets 4 MPs for 160,000ish people and the city of Cambridge (and several other ridings) got 1 MP for their 160,000ish people it IS rigged. When Quebec is guaranteed a portion of the ridings regardless of population, you KNOW it's rigged. That is one of the many reasons I support Alberta voting to separate. That is the only thing I can see that will bring about an opening of the Constitution and a redistribution of ridings to equal population. Until then, the west will remain the dog being wagged by its tail. And paying a princely sum to be tossed around by said tail. Alberta would be ahead money in less than 3 years if they left, just on NOT paying the so called "equalization", which in reality is the Laurentian Mafia stealing from everyone to line the pockets of their Quebec based friends. Sponsorship, ad-acam, arrive-scam, SNC-Lavalin, the Bell 412 helicopter buy, it goes on and on and on. A vote for a Liberal anywhere is a vote to continue fleecing the entire west of the country (the west begins at about Hwy 25 in Ontario) and if you are a Liberal voter NOT in Quebec, well you may well belong to the most clueless, selfish, tone-deaf segment of any population that has ever existed anywhere in the world happily voting to have your rights stripped, your property confiscated or taxed until you bleed, and when you are used up... well MAID. For your own good you know.

Doug Ford needs to face a leadership review and be replaced. I'm not sure that Carney is all that upset with Ford's latest stunt. Trump is back to being orange man bad; Carney putting a show on of trying to appease Trump, but gosh darn it, look at what Ford did.

We are being led by a court of fools who really don't have Canada's best interest in mind. Meanwhile the mass psychosis of TDS will blind people to reality. Carney hasn't accomplished anything but putting forth speech censorship bills, pausing the carbon tax, no trade deals, and trying to take credit for projects that were already in the works. Oops. Almost forgot the request to abolish Notwithstanding which will lead to the break away of AB, SK, QC and NL. (Did I forget any?) Oh Canada. It was nice while it lasted, before Trudeau.

Ford's always putting the cart before the horse. He's done the same thing with the prospects of the Ring of Fire area of Ontario. His ad says he's working with the indigenous of the area. However, has anyone actually heard of him meeting with any indigenous leaders? That should have been done before that ad hit the airways.

The Indigenous have to agree, and the government needs their consensus to move forward. What you're saying is the same as we have been, and that's all changing. We're looking at actually abiding by crown treaty agreements.

Indigenous Canadians don't seem to have any problem with enjoying the benefits or modernization, or the payments they receive that were earned by other Canadians. Their consensus is not required, although it would be desirable. The heads of so-called First Nations don't necessarily represent the best interests of those they represent.

What?! Are you suggesting that the Indigenous have or should have a veto over Canada's international trade agreements? Maybe, but only insofar as they might affect treaties, but that seems far-fetched, at best.

Expand full comment
Allan Clements's avatar

You've just answered your own question "insofar as they might affect treaties". That consideration has to be there from the beginning. The environment also has to be there from the beginning. Doug Ford says the Economy has to be considered first, but that's ignoring the fact that without a healthy environment, there's no place for people to live healthy lives, and without people you have no one to build an economy; healthy or otherwise. Doug Ford only put this ad out so that, if there are considerations with treaty agreements or environmental issues, he can put the blame on the indigenous even though they'd only be standing up for their rights.

Expand full comment
Jack Riley's avatar

Nonsense. You'll note that I also wrote that any notion of trade agreements conflicting with treaties is "far-fetched, at best". On environmental issues, can you point to any treaty language that would give Indians special consideration, much less a veto, on those grounds? Status Indians are about 2% of the population and have no more insight or rights on eco issues than any other Canadian. That they have or should be given a such a veto is absurd.

Again it depends on treaty agreements. You can deny it all you like, but the treaties have to be the first consideration in this country.

Come on, you can’t be that naïve. Ford and Kearney cooked this up a long time ago with the intention of yanking President Trump‘s chain, and he barked just like they wandered him too. This ensures that Donald J Trump will be our greatest enemy as we go into a November/December election if the other parties in Canada have enough courage to bring down this minority government. Once again, the liberal party will not have to account for their decade of disaster. Let’s not fall into the trap they set for us.

Ford's ill-considered ad may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, but Carney didn't help things with his pro-Palestine remarks, or his snide comment about a bet on the World Series, either. But the basis for Trump's reaction is Canada's refusal to bend on the market supply cartels.

I'm not sure if I've seen a stupider stunt pulled by any of Canada's current crop of premiers. I used to think that David Eby wore that crown but I think Doug Ford just upped the ante on the political stupidity stakes. Imagine, you're the premier of Canada's largest manufacturing province and your bleeding high paying jobs from one of your province's key manufacturing sectors. And you keep thinking it's intelligent to continue antagonizing the already protectionist leadership of the largest foreign market, by far, for your manufacturing sector's products. Ummm🤔... maybe you might just want to revisit your political acuity. W the actual F!. Not only is Doug Ford trying to single handedly destroy his province's manufacturing industry, but he's also aiming to destroy the rest of the country's economy in the process. And this idiot has the unmitigated gall to claim he's a Conservative. He sure as 💩 is no social conservative and his actions increasingly demonstrate he's no fiscal conservative either. So just what sort of conservative is this poser? Jason Kenney must be blushing, and not just a little P.Oed, that his own antics, which pale in comparison to Ford's grandstanding, got Kenney unceremoniously dumped as the premier of Alberta, while still actively in office, and thrown out of the UCP, a political party he helped create. I imagine Danielle Smith must be quietly seething, not only having this constant war with an, at best, indifferent prime minister, but now having the premier of Canada's most populous province, in one swift move, kneecap all Smith's hard work and efforts to smooth relations with the U.S. and try to bring diplomacy and plain old common sense back to these difficult trade negotiations.

It's time for the gloves to come off for Danielle Smith and Alberta and for Mark Carney himself. Carney needs to demonstrate, once and for all, that he is a leader and remove the laws restricting development of this country's resources, including oil and gas. That means telling David Eby to stay in his lane and a pipeline from Alberta to "Canada's" northern Pacific coast and an end to the tanker ban off this coast. That also means telling François Legault to stay in his lane and a pipeline from Alberta all the way to the Atlantic coast, built entirely within Canada. And that means telling Doug Ford to stay the hell off the international stage if Ford can't use his head and follow the rules of proper diplomatic conduct. For Danielle Smith, this means dropping a hint she may be inclined to the support the provincial separation referendum that's slowly moving forward if Carney doesn't meet Alberta's demands and more vigorously pursuing Alberta's own trade relationship with the U.S. and other international partners.

Ford's done his damage. The ball is now in Carney's and, to some limited extent, Smith's court.
