Demkiw confirms officer killed in line of duty was investigating U.S. consulate attack
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw has confirmed the death of an officer who was fatally shot while executing a warrant as part of the investigation into the March shooting at the U.S. Consulate.
Toronto Police Const. Marc Pinizzotto, a 43-year-old officer with 18 years of service and a member of the Emergency Task Force, was shot Thursday in North York while executing a search warrant connected to the investigation into the shooting at the U.S. Consulate building in Toronto. He later died at Sunnybrook Hospital.
Police Chief Myron Demkiw gave an emotional address confirming that Pinizzotto had died in hospital, that he and Toronto Police Association President Clayton Campbell informed Pinizzotto’s family early Thursday morning, and that one suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
“The investigation that led to the search warrant when Police Council Mac Pinizzotto was tragically killed concerned a number of shootings, including a shooting at the United States Consulate on University Avenue,” Demkiw said during the address to the media.
Demkiw said one suspect is in custody and receiving emergency medical care, while another, 19-year-old Zara Jabbi, remains “outstanding.”
