A human head found in the Rivière-des-Prairies in the Montréal-Nord borough has been confirmed by police to be male.
Police received a 911 call Sunday afternoon and arrived at the corner of Brosseau Blvd. and Drapeau Ave. at about 3 p.m.
They discovered an "inert part of a human body" on the riverbank near the Pie-IX Bridge, according to the Montreal Gazette.
A pathologist determined the decomposed head, believed to have been in the water for at least 24 hours, was the result of either foul play or an accident.
Authorities are also considering the possibility of suicide.
A security perimeter has been set up and a team of investigators deployed, according to Montreal police spokesperson Julien Lévesque.
Divers from the police’s SWAT team are searching the Rivière des Prairies area for more clues, but no further body parts have been found.
The victim’s identity and age have yet to be made public.
This is a developing story.
