A Hamilton Wentworth District School Board program that drew controversy when it launched in 2021 has now expanded to 33 schools. The lessons, rooted in critical race theory, are delivered under the guidance of equity consultant Nicole West-Burns.

In 2021, the HWDSB rolled out a ‘Learn. Disrupt. Rebuild.’ lesson package, described on their website as a means “for students to understand who they are, speak up when things are unfair, and to help create a safer learning experience for everyone.”

The lessons attracted attention from parents and members of the public. In an interview with True North, a Hamilton teacher said that “teachers were directed to teach LDR. In fact, many teachers were warned that principals were checking whether teachers had accessed the modules.” A handful of downloadable lessons were provided but “principals had a hard time advocating for (the program) because they really didn't understand what the board was actually asking teachers to do,” they said. The teacher asked to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals from the board.
