Court grants partial stay of ruling halting Alberta independence petition

The ruling allows Elections Alberta to resume signature verification while the legal battle over the province's independence petition continues.

The Alberta Court of Appeal has granted a partial stay of a lower court ruling that halted Alberta’s citizen-led independence petition, allowing portions of the process to continue while the appeal is heard.

In a decision released Monday, Alberta Court of Appeal Justice Alice Woolley wrote that the applicant would suffer “irreparable harm” if the verification process remained paused until the legal dispute was resolved.
