The current scheme of charging anyone for self defense should be amended to the following.

Any self defense action should be based on the same criteria that the nation gives police. We have all heard of a situation where a perp charges a police officer aggressively with a knife, or stick and is put down in a heartbeat in a hail of bullets.

Any other criteria isn't justice, or laws, it is in fact arbitrary punishment to keep the citizens in their place.

It is terrifying that one could be woken in the middle of the night by an intruder and if you defend your family and property you could be arrested. As Premier Smith said, if you don’t want to be beaten or shot, don’t break in to peoples homes.

Pic changed to a crossbow. But I suspect the weapon the intruder had in his possession, was maybe one of the much smaller ones that could be used with one hand. Something akin to breaking in and having a pistol instead of a rifle. Comments from the crossbowers out there?

The photo is an archer using a conventional bow, not a crossbow.

Home invasion will become a trend because governments are incompetent and indifferent. Where else will all the disaffected people and criminals find survival when authorities drop their problems on communities, and justice will continue to earn their wages from victims of self-defence?

Not very good odds bringing a knife to fight against a crossbow.

Apparently the homeowner almost killed the intruder using a knife. Good for him
