Efforts by Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath and city police to block a nationalist conference have triggered a Charter warning, with lawyers accusing them of interfering with the Dominion Society’s freedom of expression and assembly.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms warned Hamilton officials that efforts to block the Dominion Society of Canada’s “DomCon” conference violate its members’ rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
A leaked email from Horwath’s office, published Friday by WireTap Media, shows the mayor personally contacted potential venues urging them not to host the Dominion Society’s conference, after already barring it from city property.
