Conservatives grill Liberals for helping elect Iranian regime to UN committee
Conservative MP Michael Chong grilled the Liberal government for helping clear the way for the Islamic Republic in Iran’s election to an influential United Nations committee.
Conservatives blasted the Liberal government for helping to hand a key UN role to Iran’s regime despite its well-documented record of human rights abuses, warning the move undermines the very values the body claims to uphold, including protections for women.
The Liberal government deflected questions over the decision to support the vote, speaking instead of Canada’s position on the Iran war and not at all connected to why Canada helped elect the regime to a prominent position in the UN.
