Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner has introduced a revamped private member’s bill aimed at protecting children online while also defending Canadians’ freedom of expression. The move stands in contrast to the Liberal party’s renewed push for broad online censorship powers.
Bill C-216, tabled in the House of Commons this week, builds on a prior proposal from the last Parliament, Bill C-412, by expanding reporting requirements for online child sexual abuse, targeting the distribution of AI-generated “deepnudes,” and introducing a narrowly scoped duty of care for online platforms.
