A major security breach has exposed the financial records of fifteen Conservative MPs, with the serious lapse now under investigation by both the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and the RCMP.
The affected MPs had their individual financial histories exposed in the cyber attack, including loans, mortgages, or other money owing. Details regarding whether they make their payments on time were also obtained.
“We are aware of an alleged breach and have been in direct communication with the individual victims of the illicit information disclosure,” party spokesperson Sarah Fischer told True North.
“We will work tirelessly to hold account anyone who would be responsible for the illegal distribution of confidential information.”
The party first became aware of the breach on Monday.
The MPs’ information was sent out to party insiders via email by a contact who referred to themselves as “Rory McTory.”
The name is also used as a moniker for the Conservatives when the party needs a placeholder name for internal purposes, such as document mock-ups and testing websites.
A copy of the email was later obtained by The Globe and Mail, which reportedly contained records and reports from credit agencies that would have been submitted to the party when the MPs sought their nominations.
Conservative MPs Jamil Jivani and Billy Morin, the former Chief of the Enoch Cree Nation, were among those affected.
