Conservative bill to end repeat taxes on used cars could save Canadians $1,835

The tax-cutting measure builds on Conservative plans to support the auto industry by removing GST on Canada-made vehicles, ending the EV mandate and securing a tariff-free auto pact.

Buying a used car in Canada can mean paying sales tax on the exact same vehicle over and over again as it changes hands. Conservatives say that racket has gone on long enough, tabling a bill they claim would save the average buyer roughly $1,835 and put an end to what they call a tax that punishes working people instead of helping them.

Conservatives tabled Bill C-285 on Sunday, saying the measure would counter “Liberal insiders” and “corporate elites.”

The party says used vehicle prices have nearly doubled since 2019, rising from $18,900 to $36,700 and compounding affordability pressures alongside higher grocery and fuel costs.
