CMHC reports decline in housing starts this year, predicts further drop in 2027
The agency expects housing starts to fall another 7.5 per cent annually to 223,400 units in 2027 and then by an additional 5 per cent to 211,900 units in 2028.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. has forecasted a decline in home building across the country over the next two years, despite promises from the Carney government to construct houses at rates not seen since the Second World War.
The Liberals’ promise of “turbocharging” Canada’s housing supply appears to be in direct conflict with its own agency’s latest data, which predicts annual housing starts will fall 7 per cent this year and continue to drop through 2027.
