Chinese car plants coming to Canada?
'Straight Up' covers Mark Carney's trip to China, the failure thus far to get canola tariffs removed, and the Liberals' new trial ballon of bringing Chinese car plants to Canada.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is in China, but so far, no tangible deals have materialized. Importantly, tariffs on Canadian canola remain in place, and it’s unclear if we will see progress before the trip ends.
But Liberal Industry Minister Melanie Joly did open the door to having Chinese vehicle manufacturing come to Canada.
What would that mean for Canada’s current auto manufacturing sector? Would other manufacturers quickly be driven out of business by Chinese competitors who don’t play by the same rules?
And what would it mean for Canada’s trade relations with the United States – especially at this critical time as the USMCA/CUSMA free trade deal is up for renewal?
Joining ‘Straight Up’ today is Brian Kingston, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, to discuss the threat of Chinese vehicles and what the Liberals’ trial ballon would mean for Canadian workers.

OMG,,,,IF,,this happens, it will be the beginning of of the end ! No way will there be a Chinese owned factory in this country ! There, somehow would have to be a nonconfidence vote.
Otherwise,,,,there will be an awful fight from the USA,,,,.and, at that time, Canadians will want and ask for the 51st !
Get rid of Carney quickly, please. Chinese CANNOT BE TRUSTED EVER. This government is really desperate for friends, apparently. Having China manufacture cars in Canada "is a bridge too far". God help us. Close ties with the commies... what next? (Rhetorical question).
