China’s ambassador to Canada is warning Ottawa that if the Liberal government wants to strengthen and build a “strategic partnership” with China, it must bar MPs from visiting the self-governed island of Taiwan and stop sending Canadian naval vessels through the Taiwan Strait.

In an interview with the publicly funded Canadian Press, Chinese Ambassador to Canada Wang Di reportedly urged Canada to sever all ties with Taiwan and refrain from participating in U.S.-led exercises in the Taiwan Strait, claiming Taiwan belongs to China.

Canada ended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1970 under former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and has adhered to a “One China policy” ever since, recognizing the communist government in Beijing as the sole legitimate government of “Chinese territory,” including Taiwan and Tibet.
