The CBC ignored discrepancies in the historical record in a recent article reporting on an alleged discovery by a local First Nation in Sturgeon Lake of 62 potential unmarked graves.

Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation is seeking better records to determine how many of its 202 missing children died at residential schools between 1907 and 1968.

Leaders say 82 individuals have been identified and may be linked to 62 “unmarked graves” near the former St. Francois Xavier Residential School in Calais, Alberta. However, on November 5, 2021, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) listed 27 names for the Sturgeon Lake Indian residential school, including two duplicates.
