The left wing extremists have always lived in the world of participation ribbons. Getting paid $300,000.00 a year plus expenses does not make a happy life, one must also be awarded some ribbons by their cult.

In the business of journalism, this is a reasonable expense. Awards mean credibility and thus access. Where spots available for journos is limited an event is going to prioritize award winner over joe schmoe outlet. Likewise, it means the ability to charge more for advertising space.

There is a lot to criticize the CBC over and numerous examples of waste, but this is actually a biz generating activity and it costs less than a 500th of a single percentage of their budget (or put another way, is like criticizing someone for their wasteful spend on frivilous luxuries because they bought a biz contact a pumpkin spice latte, while they are buying a new car each year)
