Canadian tourists found themselves trapped inside their resorts and hotels this weekend as a powerful drug cartel unleashed chaos across several Mexican cities, burning cars, businesses, and banks in retaliation for the Mexican army killing their cartel boss.

At least 25 Mexican National Guard members were killed and three were injured by the cartel Sunday, following the assassination of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel’s (CJNG) leader “El Mencho,” Mexico’s security secretary announced Monday. The Mexican government indicated the U.S. provided intelligence support in the operation.
