Prime Minister Mark Carney has spent months giving ground to Washington — scrapping taxes, rewriting regulations, sharing bridge revenues and retreating on retaliatory tariffs.
But when a reporter asked the obvious question — what did Canada get in return? — Carney didn’t name a single reciprocal U.S. concession.
During a July 29 press conference, a reporter confronted Carney over Ottawa’s reversals on the Digital Services Tax, foreign-streamer funding and the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Carney instead pointed to Canada’s broader economic position.
“We still have the lowest tariff rate of any country on an average basis.”
“North of 80 per cent of our trade... is tariff-free with the United States,” he added, declaring: “We’re stronger than we were when this started.”
