Carney taps former Conservative leader for U.S. advisory council
Carney touts a new Canada–U.S. advisory council as a key step in trade talks, but questions remain over whether it will deliver meaningful progress or simply serve as political cover if talks fail
Former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole is among several prominent names joining Mark Carney’s new Canada–U.S. advisory council. But will it actually move the needle on stalled trade talks?
The council brings together voices from across politics and industry, including Harper-era cabinet minister Lisa Raitt, in what Carney calls a “diverse” group meant to guide Canada’s approach. But critics say it may be more about optics than outcomes.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre argues that Canada holds real leverage, from critical minerals to energy exports, and should be using it to push for a tariff-free deal with the United States.
Manufacturing executive Ves Sobot, who previously sat on Ontario’s U.S. trade council, joins Marc Patrone to provide an inside view on these panels. He warns they can quickly drift off-mission and become distractions, and may even serve as political cover if negotiations fail.

I have a lot of respect for O'Toole personally, but the idea of yet another Liberal-inspired committee smells like a smokescreen. It provides nothing substantive, and Carney has shown no indication he intends to act in the interest of all Canadians instead of the Liberal Party, and his elitist ambition to sell out Canada to the EU/WEF cabal.
Like Mr Sobot said the advisory council is just optics & therefore more Carney BS which is his only claim to fame ‼️…a good thing the US (Lutnick)is watching the con’s dealings with China & funny that the con man goes to China hoping to sell Canadian products, but ends up buying spyware vehicles🤣🤣🤣
