Prime Minister Mark Carney has chosen a former high-ranking official who advised the Liberal government to use the controversial Emergencies Act to crush peaceful protests, to now lead Canada’s turbulent trade negotiations with the United States and Mexico.
In 2022, Charette recommended the Trudeau government invoke the Emergencies Act for the first time to quash peaceful demonstrators participating in the Freedom Convoy protest against COVID-19 mandates.
