The Liberal government has ditched the Islamophobia czar and antisemitism envoy positions, opting instead for one broad advisory council on rights, equality and inclusion.

The federal government has formally ended the role of Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, a position held since 2023 by Amira Elghawaby. The move also scraps the Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism, which has been vacant since Deborah Lyons resigned in July. Lyons, a former Canadian ambassador to Israel, was appointed by Justin Trudeau in 2023.
