After foreign media leaked that Prime Minister Mark Carney was allegedly in talks with European leaders to allow Canada to become an unprecedented “associate member” of the European Union, Carney is now denying that Canada is seeking such a membership.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is now demanding answers from the Prime Minister and blasted him for not informing Canada about his plans and making Canadians learn about his alleged backroom conversations through foreign media.
While at the Toronto International Film Festival, Carney told reporters that Canada was “not looking to become a member of the European Union.”
“What we are looking and beginning, will begin discussions for [a] unique alliance with the European Union, between Canada and the European Union,” he said on Sunday. “We share the same values. We have the same priorities, and we have very complementary strengths. We’re stronger together, and this is at a time where the world’s more dangerous and divided. And friends need to stick together at these times.”
The move to seek a “unique alliance” with the EU comes as trade relations with the U.S. are continuously fraught with escalating tariffs on both sides of the border.
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One that Canada is “the worst country to deal with.”
“I find Canada to be the worst country to deal with. The most difficult country. With that being said, they’re dying to make a deal. I find Canada to be very, very difficult to deal with,” he said. “Their leaders, not the people; the people are fantastic.”
Poilievre took shots at Carney for not having immediately addressed the supposed push by Canada to join the EU with a new title made specifically for Canada, reported the Wall Street Journal over the weekend.
In a post on X, Poilievre called for Canada’s “shuttered” Parliament to reconvene so Carney can answer to the House of Commons about his supposed plans to form a “unique alliance” with the EU.
“The Welland welder did not elect a Eurocrat to regulate our steel. The Saskatchewan farmer and the Atlantic fisherman did not choose a Brussels agrifood regulator that has never even seen our prairies or coasts,” he said. “We will NEVER be the 51st U.S. state. And we will NEVER be the 28th EU state.”
The Office of the Official Opposition and the Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to Juno News’ requests for comment.
Carney's comments amount to doublespeak.
