Carney refuses to say the word "recession"
Carney said that while the “data is going to be uneven,” the economy’s weakness is “in part because of clear decisions by the government.”
After five days and repeated attempts by journalists, Prime Minister Mark Carney finally acknowledged “some weakness” in the Canadian economy but stopped short of using the word “recession” or directly addressing Statistics Canada’s data or characterization.
“This government’s been in the process of laying the foundations for a stronger, more resilient, more independent Canadian economy,” Carney said on Tuesday when asked directly about the recession again by reporters on Parliament Hill.
