Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government was willing to make trade concessions to Washington, but Canada’s protectionist supply management system remained a red line.
“We would take administrative measures to protect supply management without changing the system itself, the U.S. quotas, or the tariffs that would apply,” Carney told reporters Saturday.

His comments came after the U.S. threatened 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian industries ranging from hockey equipment and clothing to cement and beer.
Ottawa offered to drop retaliatory tariffs and restore U.S. alcohol sales if Washington lowered tariffs on strategic Canadian industries.
However, when it came to supply management, Carney held the same line as Poilievre.
