Carney downplays reports that he plans to prorogue Parliament
Earlier this week, two Liberals sources leaked to media that the Carney may prorogue Parliament to gain more control over committees if they win upcoming by-elections.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “surprised” to hear sources say his government plans to prorogue Parliament this month.
While speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Carney attempted to throw cold water on reports that he was considering prorogation after potentially securing a majority government in upcoming byelections.
“It has never even entered my thinking, the possibility of that. So, I couldn’t have been more surprised to see suggestion that that was under consideration,” said Carney.
Reports emerged citing sources within the Liberal party who claimed that Carney may soon prorogue Parliament if they manage to win the three upcoming by-elections slated for later this month.
The anonymous sources told the Globe and Mail that Prime Minister Mark Carney intends to prorogue Parliament to better gain control over committee agendas and the passage of legislation.
