Carney-backed candidate cries foul after losing Ontario Liberal nomination
Former Liberal Party of Canada president Stephen LeDrew says Nate Erskine-Smith must provide proof of voting irregularities in his Ontario Liberal Party nomination loss or accept defeat and move on
A bitter nomination battle in Scarborough Southwest is exposing deep dysfunction inside the Ontario Liberal Party after leadership hopeful Nate Erskine-Smith lost by just 19 votes—and then publicly suggested the process may have been unfair.
But longtime Liberal insider Stephen LeDrew isn’t buying the vague accusations. He says if Erskine-Smith has evidence of wrongdoing, he should present it immediately. If not, LeDrew argues, the defeated candidate should stop implying fraud and accept the result. He joins Marc Patrone to break it all down.
The controversy is also raising larger questions about the party’s competence, after reports of chaotic voting procedures, ID issues, and allegations involving non-traditional voters at the nomination meeting. LeDrew says the episode makes the party look disorganized and unprepared for prime time.
The loss is also seen as a political embarrassment for Mark Carney, who publicly endorsed Erskine-Smith only to see his preferred candidate defeated in dramatic fashion.
