Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a sweeping set of protectionist trade measures and tariffs he says will protect the Canadian steel industry, including new quotas on a select number of steel imports, a 25% tariff on Chinese poured steel, and taxpayer handouts for Canadian steel companies.
Carney announced the new measures on Wednesday in Hamilton, a steel manufacturing town. Among the measures, a new tariff quota was introduced in a bid to “protect” Canada’s steel industry.
